Thai Jasmine
rice is a traditional Thai rice variety, found commonly in the
small village of Bang Klar in central Thailand. Long ago,
Jasmine rice was not very popular and therefore was only consumed in
local and nearby villages. This is because traditional Jasmine Rice
was dark in color and becomes very soft when cooked, while traditional
Thais preferred to eat rice that is relatively hard. In the early
1970s, Thailand started to develop rapidly. Both the private and
government sectors of the economy looked for alternative rice
varieties to trade in the international markets. Jasmine rice was
therefore transferred to other regions to be test-grown. The studies
carried out revealed that Jasmine Rice grown in the
Northeastern regions of Thailand gave white-looking,
beautiful rice without loosing its aroma and soft cooking
characteristic. This was the quality of rice preferred by the upper
export-oriented markets. The first Jasmine export marked the beginning
of its growing popularity.
